Back to School Information 2018-2019!

Dear Parents,

I hope you have had enough time to relax, regenerate and recreate. Also know are ready to start the new school year! I have some exciting news to share with you.

First of all, after some careful consideration and with the approval of Superintendent Faulkner, I have decided to step out of the classroom this year and focus on administration only. Although I will miss the direct contact with the students, I believe committing my time to the total community should take a priority this year.

We are blessed to have some new members on the OLV team. I have hired Melissa O’Neill to take over the Junior High part-time teaching position. Mrs. O’Neill was a teacher at Our Lady of Victory several years ago. She is an excellent teacher and she brings with her ideas, enthusiasm, a strong work ethic and her faith in Jesus Christ. Betty Kempen has accepted the position of Office Assistance. Mrs. Kempen is extremely organized and she has already had a positive effect on the office. She will also continue working as the Activities Director. Ms. Amy Hirata is now the official parttime bookkeeper and she will continue as Preschool Director as well.

We have new curriculum this year. In grades kindergarten thru 4th the students will use Ready Math and Go Math will be used in 5th-8th grades. Both of these programs have an online component so I have purchased 30 more iPads. This year math will be taught for 90 minutes each day. To enhance and enrich this time our students will have access to the IXL program. This program will give students extra practice on common core math standards and will also be used for language arts, science and social studies. IXL will also allow our students to work at their individual pace. The Rosetta Stone language program will also be available to our students and they will be learning Spanish. If your student is already fluent in Spanish we have twelve other languages for students to choose from. I have also purchased a few extra Rosetta Stone licenses for any parent who would like to learn a new language. There will be more information about these programs at Back to School Night.

This year I have modified arrival and dismissal times for Monday. Beginning this school year, Monday’s school day will begin at 9:00 am. The teachers will have their weekly staff meetings on Monday morning from 7:30 am -8:45 am. For those that need to be at work early, there will be childcare available during this time at no cost to parents. Dismissal for Monday – Friday will be at 3:00 pm.

The final piece of news comes from Father Jesus. He has asked us to attend Friday Mass earlier this year. We decided to start the year with the target Mass time of 8:15am. This means students will drop off their backpacks in the classrooms, go to the restroom and be in line by 8:07am. If we do not make it by 8:15, Father is willing to wait for us. This early start will give the students more instruction time on Friday’s, and allow Father to get an early start down at the Diocese.

Below are some important dates for you to remember. I am looking forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks!
